Our next Men’s Reading Group (MRG) will take place at the home of our brother, David M, on Saturday February 15, 2020. The location may change depending on how David and his wonderful wife may feel at that time. We will still meet at the church if we cannot share this moment of fellowship with David at his home.
So what will our topic be?Well, according to the latest newsletter, the theme for Lent this year will be “The Bible’s Trees.” Did you know that the story of God begins in Genesis with a tree and ends in Revelation with a tree? Indeed, our salvation hangs on a tree and, more importantly, an empty tomb. What better way to get our minds ready for Lent and attuned to Pastor’s theme than to take a look at trees in the Bible. You will need your to bring your Bible and be prepared to read and discuss the following passages:
- Genesis 2:8-9, 15-17
- Exodus 15:27
- Numbers 24:5-7
- Judges 8:7-21
- Psalm 92:12-15
- Proverbs 3:18, 11:30
- Jeremiah 8:81-13, 11:16-20, 17:8
- Ezekiel 17 (esp. vv. 22-24), 31:2-9
- Daniel 4:10ff
- Hosea 14:5-10
- Joel 1:7, 12
- Zechariah 11:2
- Mark 11:12-14, 20-25
- Luke 13:18-19, 21:29-36
- Acts 5:30, 10:30, 13:29
- Revelation 2:7, 22 (esp. vv. 1-5, 14-17)
The list above is NOT exhaustive, and does not cover most of what Pastor Young will cover during Lent with his sermons. However, it will give us good ground to cover to open our hearts and minds to God’s use of trees, among other things, in His story of the redemption of the world and mankind.
We may not get through everything, but we will have a spirited discussion with good fellowship.
As is customary, we will share a meal. We need coffee, juice, and/or water. Please respond in the comment section below for what you will bring and whether you will attend. If the comment section doesn’t appear, click the title of the article to be taken to the page with commenting. Please RSVP by 2/13/2020 so that we can provide an accurate count to David and Joann for the miscreants who will be crossing the threshold of their residence that morning.
And don’t worry, we hope to aggregate the responses from below into one email letting everybody know the assigned duties, times, and locations. Please be patient while we try this new process.
